Designed for a one-semester course that covers the major aspects
of law, the highly teachable Contemporary Employment Law explores
the legal essentials of managing a modern workforce. The text identifies the
differences between employees and independent contractors, then proceeds
through the phases of hiring, promotion, and termination of employment.
Modern employment issues covered include selecting employees;
whistleblowing; immigration and nationality; current laws and regulations on
pay, disability, and age discrimination; work-family conflicts; global
employment; and much more. Each chapter features well-edited landmark cases.
Students will learn to frame the issues that managers must identify in the
workplace through abundant examples, management applications, and “Focus on
Ethics” sections. The companion website offers online student support.
The presentation has been streamlined, to make the Second
Edition even more readable and accessible. More short cases and
practice forms help students learn. New Supreme Court, federal, and state
cases are briefed, including: AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion,
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Dukes , LP, Staub v. Proctor Hosp., Kasten v.
Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corp., Christopher v. SmithKline Beecham,
Rainey v. Domino’s Pizza, and Nixon-Tinkelman v. New York City Dep't
of Health and Mental Hygiene; New statutes and regulations are explored,
including: Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010,
the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, updates to the National
Labor Relations Act (NLRA), and the implementation of Genetic Information
Nondiscrimination Act of 2008. The text incorporates the influences of changing
economic realities and business practices, and each chapter contains new ethic
cases to prompt critical thinking.
